HOKI was born the morning Shlomit Slavin, a Tel Aviv based production and fashion professional, got on her bicycle and rode along one of the old parts of south Tel Aviv, where all the shabby shops and fashion outlets are. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a shoe store that sold all kinds of out-of-date shoes and sandals. On the wall, an old pair of plastic sandals that used to be popular in the 1970s caught her eye.
Before, anyone caught wearing them would be considered odd or a fashion freak. For Shlomit, those sandals sent her back to her youth and touched a nerve that she knew would touch others.
She bought a pair and began investigating, located the manufacturers, and was able to recover the original molds and buy the rights for production.
She named the brand HOKI, meaning street broom in Japanese, conveying the essence of something simple, functional yet highly fashionable and up-to-date.
HOKI sandals were a hit and were sold in many major cities, from Tokyo to New York .
Since then, Shlomit was joined by her sister Mira Karmely, bringing vast experience in styling and fashion for TV and media, and together they continue to develop new collections, following the same concept that brought about the original HOKI collection.
Currently focusing mainly on the Israeli market, HOKI is planning to expand its business to new markets.
